Larry ‘The Natural’ Ekundayo a gifted welterweight undefeated Prizefighter winner move one step closer to a world ranking with the WBC by beating Joseph Lamptey for the vacant African Boxing Union (ABU) welterweight title at The Troxy on Friday.
Ekundayo best known for winning Sky Sports’ Prizefighter three years ago, took on Lamptey in their Commonwealth title final eliminator as they compete for the ABU welterweight title. Ekundayo sent Joseph ‘The Double Horror’ Lamptey packing and came away with the ABU Welterweight Championship Belt.
On Thursday when Nigeria’s Larry The Natural Ekundayo and Ghana’s Joseph Double Horror Lamptey came face to face at the weigh in ahead of yesterday night’s showdown for the African Welterweight Title tempers flared over the Nigerian flag.
Enraged Lamptey demanded to know where his Ghanian flag was and grabbed the Nigerian flag from Larry and flew it to the floor.
Every single Nigerian in the room felt the disrespect to their bones because when Larry’s name was announced on the match day although he came out to the dulcet tones of Sam Cooke’s A Change Gon’ Come, the room erupted into chants of “Larry! Larry!!” and that’s just how the night continued.
Larry fought that fight with the full support of the Nigerian audience, he was surrounded by an able team – manager, publicist, and trainers all of them decked in the impressive green that is Nigeria identity and branded by Arik Air – the proud sponsors.
Among the dignitaries who were there to offer him moral support were Chief Bimbo Folayan, the former chairman of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK, African Voice publisher Mike Abiola, top MC Charles Khiran and Otunba Femi Adenuga. A graduate of Lagos State University, Larry is now expected to fight for the British welterweight title. –
The Ghanaian was a worthy adversary but in the end, Larry the Lion was simply a better boxer, his punches connected more, and he paced himself better. The judges announced Larry ‘The Natural’ Ekundayo the winner and the new African Boxing Union Welterweights
