It is becoming a tired cliché to note that Nigeria is a country with vast potentials which have remained unrealized due to socio-political and economic challenges of which dearth of transformational leadership is at the heart of all.
Again, it is common knowledge that this leadership deficit is more severe in northern Nigeria relative to other parts of the country. A disturbing yet overlooked dimension of this leadership conundrum however, is that leaders who ought to be responsible for identifying the problems and finding solutions seem to have little understanding of what these problems are, they prefer to ignore them or both, and hence have little or no solutions to them. The leaders are also becoming progressively disconnected from the ordinary people and their concerns.
One of those leaders is Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, the chairman of the northern elders council, who dismissed claims by the military that northern leaders sponsor Boko Haram, urging to call those sponsors’ names if they have them.
Claims by the military that some northern leaders are sponsoring Boko Haram movement have no grounds, told the press Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, the chairman Of the Northern elders council. In his opinion those claims are simply illogical.
“Why should a northerner support the killing of his own fellow northerner? For what reason? It doesn’t make sense to me,” asked Yakassai, adding that “I don’t think it will make sense to any right thinking person that some northern leaders will be sponsoring Boko Haram to kill their own people.”
He also called the military to publish the names of the Boko Haram sponsors immediately in case they really have substantial evidence base.
Yakassai also praised Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for its efforts in eliminating the Boko Haram insurgency by the military, expressing hopes that the war on terror would be won by the end of the year.
“The war against the insurgents is being fought both on the ground and in the air, and this is in a sustained effort than before. I believe that God’s willing by the end of this year the synergy will continue and eventually Boko Haram insurgents will be totally defeated,” he concluded.
Australian Negotiator, Dr Stephen Davis has insisted that former governor of Borno State, Modu Sheriff and former Chief of Army Staff, General Onyeabo Azubuike Ihejirika are Boko Haram sponsors.
Dr Stephen Davis’ revelation is coming after ex-Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Nasir El-Rufai also revealed on August 28, that Modu Sheriff, Gen. Ihejirika are Boko Haram sponsors.
The Nigerian Army has accused the elite in the Northeast region especially Borno state, on been bent on having the activities of Boko Haram insurgents prolonged for their selfish gains.
The army on Friday, September 25, raised an alarm over plans by some of these individuals to sabotage military operations in the area.
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a socio-political association in the northern part of Nigeria has condemned leaders in the region who are allegedly aiding the activities of Boko Haram,
At the same time, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, has restated the military’s commitment to end the activities of the deadly Boko Haram sect.
According to him, the military was determined to meet the set deadline of defeating the insurgents by December.
One day ago the Nigerian Army has revealed that they have gotten clues about those who were involved in the recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri.
