The Nigerian Legion has appealed to the federal and state governments to provide them job opportunities in order to reduce their sufferings.
The Legioners also expressed the need for government to improve on the payment of the legion and make it consistent.
Rivers State Commandant of the Corps of Commissioners, Lieutenant Colonel Sunday Omueti, described the burden related to the Nigerian Legion as enormous, adding that the provision of security jobs would ease such burden.
“We call on the state government to continually provide security jobs for the Legioners in the state. The sole purpose of the Nigerian Legion was to seek job replacement for people in order to make money for the Legion.
“The Legioners are suffering too much, especially those who lost their loved ones and bread winners while on duty and those who are now retired. So, we need encouragement for them in order to alleviate their suffering.” Omueti said.
In his remark, the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Mr. Kenneth Kobani, assured that government would improve on the funding of the Nigerian Legion and provide security jobs for those in the state.
According to Kobani, “The state government will ensure that members of the Nigerian Legion are duly employed in the state’s secretariat for security functions.
“The state government will approve fund to improve what the Legioners normally get at the end of the month. We want to make this approval for their payment to ensure that what they usually get come to them.”
He, however, urged them to shun any form of crime or any act that would make them lose focus and abandon their responsibilities.
